Visit to Myanmar
From August 21-24, Prof. Yuichi Ono and Mr. Takuya Ito (Co-researcher) visited Myanmar to consider the procedures needed and technical issues to be dealt with in incorporating disaster damage statistics in Myanmar into the global database to be established in the Global Centre for Disaster Statistics (GCDS). Also, they conducted hearings concerning the kinds of support GCDS could carry out. They visited disaster-related government agencies: the Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, the Survey Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, and the Planning Department and the Central Statistical Organization of the Ministry of Planning and Finance.
At RRD, there was an agreement with the department to collaborate with the Myanmar office of UNDP, to implement a project of cross-sectional collection of disaster damage data among various government agencies, and GCDS agreed to make a commitment in integrating disaster damage data in the country. Furthermore, through hearings in related government agencies, they were able to confirm the developments in social and economic statistics in Myanmar.
The government staff of Myanmar showed pride and passion towards their work. They may not be equipped with high-tech instrument; however, with their desire to improve their capacities, we believe that their efforts will bear fruit in the near future. The GCDS would like to contribute to the further development of new Myanmar.
